Nor is it only about friendship and fun. Girl Scouting is about building courage, confidence, and character. It helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.
My family has a history in scouting. My father was a teenager when he was sent to the Boy Scout World Jamboree and he remained active even after my youngest brother graduated from College. My mom was a troop leader during her years as an educator. All of my siblings attended camping in different levels and I enjoyed being a troop leader for six years. So, when I became a school administrator, I’d always motivate the students and teachers to get involved in scouting. I guess it is because I believe in scouting so much and the benefits it offers. It helps develop discipline, self-empowerment, leadership skills and a desire for community involvement.
Now that the Fitchburg Girls Scouts are getting ready for the town registration, I personally encourage all girls, ages 5-18 to show up on Thursday, September 13, from 5-8 pm at 326 South St., in the South Street School cafeteria. Registration is only $10; but the education and the experience will be priceless!
