Most of us want to give our children the best possible start in life. Fitchburg parents are lucky because with the existence of private schools in the area, they are able to choose the best educational environment for their children and one that fits their family values as well. Because private schools enjoy greater autonomy, they have authority over their curriculum; textbook selection; admissions, retention, and disciplinary policies; and personnel policies, including employment contracts. Too bad, 104-year-old St. Joseph’s closed for good after this past school year.

Even though Fitchburg is a small city, it has an extensive list of public schools serving approximately 6,000 students. Each of these schools provides learning experiences that engage all students in achieving high academic standards. Being culturally diversed in nature, most discussions in its classrooms are rich and challenging, fostering critical thinking skills. Students are able to realize that there are a range of perspectives on issues, motivating them to study and thoughtfully define their own views.

Finally, Fitchburg has a charter school, North Central Charter Essential School, that offers 7th to 12th grades. It is the home of Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School which is better known as MontyTech. It also has its own state college that offers more than 50 undergraduate programs in 23 academic disciplines. What more can we ask for?
